Miami coach Mario Cristobal plans to stick around his alma mater for a long time.
The Hurricanes coach, who is entering his fifth season at the helm in Coral Gables, has agreed to a “long-term” contract extension, according to a report from On3.
A UM spokesperson did not return a request for comment on Monday evening.
Cristobal originally signed a 10-year contract (which would take him through the 2031 season) to start his Miami tenure. That contract paid Cristobal a reported $8 million per year. The UM coach will also make a “substantial donation” to the school, according to On3.
Cristobal, who won two national titles during his tenure as a Miami player, took over as the head coach at UM before the 2022 season. The Hurricanes went 5-7 in his first season but steadily improved over the next three years. Miami went 7-6 in Cristobal’s second season and 10-3 in his third.
Last season, the Hurricanes finished the regular season 10-2 and made their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff. Miami reeled off three consecutive wins in the postseason, reaching the national title game for the first time since the 2002 season. UM fell to Indiana in the national championship game.
Cristobal has a 35-19 record in his first four seasons as the Hurricanes’ head coach. He has a 97-79 career record in 14 seasons as a head coach at UM, Oregon and FIU.
