Jan. 15—JAMESTOWN — Hunter Bell has been wrestling at the high school level since November.
"I've always wanted to wrestle since I was younger but I just never did it," said Bell, a junior for the Jamestown High School wrestling team. "I used to wrestle with my brothers when I was younger and I've always liked wrestling — I went to a lot of tournaments when I was younger."
On Thursday, Bell got his first career win.
Bell produced a hard-fought six minutes that resulted in an 12-7 decision over Turtle Mountain's Jett Dauphinais. The junior's win was one of six individual victories by the Jays against the Braves. Turtle Mountain topped Jamestown 40-30. The loss puts the Jays at 0-2-0 in the conference and 0-3-0 overall in dual matches. The Blue Jays will be back in action on Friday at Bismarck St. Mary's. The varsity dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
"I was expecting it to be a pretty close dual," JHS head coach Patrick Schlosser said of Thursday night's contest. "We had to have some upsets on our end to get it there — at 145 with Keagen (Margos) that was an upset — he was up a weight. We needed some of those (upsets) to happen and they did. We just happened to be open at 172. It was a big ask for our first-year heavyweight wrestler to be in that match but he went out there and he did it for us so that was great."
Jamestown gained the lead early by way of a forfeit and while TMCHS rallied and put up a major at 114, the real excitement began with Bell's match.
"I was expecting to go out there and fight for my life," Bell said for what he was expecting for the match. "(Those six minutes) — they were very tough. I was trying to put in everything I had. I knew I was up a few points so even if he did get a take-down I would have time to come back and tie it but it felt so good to win."
Bell's overall match record stands at 1-2.
"He's a good example of a kid who didn't know much about wrestling but he likes to be aggressive and he likes to work hard and he's really put in a lot of work into a short amount of time and it paid off tonight in front of his home crowd," Schlosser said of Bell. "It was really fun moment."
Cole Anderson kept the excitement going. The freshman notched a pin at the 1:41 mark to put the Jays up 16-4.
A pin by Turtle Mountain's Durand Hamley at 133 pounds got the Braves back within six. TMCHS senior Landon Wallette tied things up with a pin in the 139-pound match. The Braves won four out of the next seven matches to secure the win.
"We competed really well tonight," Schlosser said. "That was really fun. It was nice. We got to see some of those kids who have been here for a couple of years now and they are into their third year of wrestling and they are starting to figure it out. They are putting themselves in a position to win a match.
"After a match like this, I hope we come out more hungry and try to get that win," he said.
