The Philadelphia Eagles offense has been the center of attention throughout training camp, though the bigger focus has been on how the starting unit looks. Rightfully so, too, as the Eagles have to ensure they're a lot better on that side of the football than they were a season ago.
However, there were some other factors at play here, including who is going to be the backup quarterback.
As of right now, the Eagles have four quarterbacks on their roster with Cole Payton, Jalen Hurts, Andy Dalton, and Tanner McKee. Keeping all of those guys on the roster obviously doesn't seem to be the plan right now, which should lead to a potential trade or release of one of Payton, Dalton, and McKee.
According to the latest, however, it doesn't sound like Payton is going to be the guy who gets moved. In fact, it would be the first time Howie Roseman moves on from a fifth-round pick in training camp since 2019.
“The Eagles have less than a month to make a decision, but that is ample time to evaluate their quarterback depth. Their first preseason game is Aug. 15 against the Baltimore Ravens. The following week, the Eagles have a two-day joint practice with the New England Patriots. The Eagles may indeed keep both players. The organization values mentorship. McKee said Dalton is a “great guy” he can “learn a ton from,” and “it’s great picking his brain, especially with the new offense.” Keeping Dalton around as a resource for McKee (and, of course, Hurts) offers in-season value.
“But Roseman’s fifth-round investment in Payton is notable. The Eagles haven’t waived a fifth-round pick in training camp since 2019 — a quarterback, Clayton Thorson (but after signing Josh McCown midway through camp),” Brooks Kubena said of Payton.
Fifth-round picks are fifth-round picks, so I don't want to sit here and say that if the Eagles believe that McKee or Dalton is going to be the better option, they won't move on from Payton.
However, there's a reason why Roseman selected him, so in that regard, it's not crazy to say that he could find himself on the roster. Ultimately, this is something the Eagles will have to figure out, and time isn't exactly on their side at this point.
