Bryant Johnson WR
Impact: Johnson is a reach at this selection for a team that, while they need WRs, have critical needs on defense. Johnson is a big, physical possession receiver, but he's a lot like Frank Sanders, a player who was the #2 wideout in Arizona for a decade. Johnson could be effective as a rookie, and is no doubt better than what the Cardinals have left at the position, but he isn't a go-to player that will make a major impact. In the end, trading down may not have been a wise move for a team that could have had Terrell Suggs with the sixth selection.
Round 1/18 Calvin Pace DE
Impact: Pace is a great athlete, but he's another reach. The Cardinals have registered just 40 sacks the last two years, but they have a woeful record when it comes to developing pass rushers: Simeon Rice atrophied with the organization and needed a change of scenery; Andre Wadsworth got hurt after a promising start. Pace, like Wadsworth, has had injury problems. Another issue for Pace will be the lack of a dominating presence in the middle, meaning that he will face double teams often. The Cardinals really don't have the luxury of a pass rush specialist, so Pace will play every down. He probably isn't ready.
Round 2/54 Anquan Boldin WR
Impact: The Cardinals needed multiple bodies at WR, so taking both Boldin and Bryant Johnson makes sense. In fact, they may have gotten first-round value in Boldin. What they lack now at wideout, having taken two possession types, is the speed to stretch the defense. It's a testament to how much 40-times matter to NFL types that Boldin was still sitting on the board with this selection.
Round 3/70 Gerald Hayes LB
Impact: MLB was one of a dozen trouble spots for the Cardinals, so selecting Hayes to replace Mark Frederickson (or, possibly, to play the strong side) was a wise move. He may make his biggest impact when blitzing; the Cardinals really haven't had a pass rush threat at any of their LB positions in recent years.
