The theme of the first two days of the 2025 NFL draft for the San Francisco has been defense. After selecting a pair of defensive linemen with their first two picks, the 49ers opted to add a linebacker with their first pick in the third round.
With their last pick on day two, the 49ers weren't done rebuilding their defense. At No. 100 overall, the 49ers selected Western Kentucky cornerback Upton Stout in round three.
With the addition of Stout, the 49ers have now addressed every level of their defense, with picks at defensive line, linebacker and now secondary.
Similar to their picks at other spots on the defense, the 49ers are going through a change at the corner position. After leading their cornerback room for three seasons, Charvarius Ward departed from San Francisco over the offseason. Along with Ward, fellow veterans Isaac Yiadom and Rock Ya-Sin all found new homes in the offseason.
Stout is the latest cornerback to join San Francisco's new-look cornerback group, filled with recent draft picks like Renardo Green and Darrell Luter Jr.
Similar to fellow third-round pick, Nick Martin, Stout is undersized at 5-foot-8, 181 lbs. However, his 4.4 speed should help him get on the field early in his career, and potentially at the nickel corner position.
In five seasons at the college level between North Texas and Western Kentucky, Stout lined up all over the field in the secondary, playing on the outside and at the slot.
Stout earned an 80 or better grade with Pro Football Focus over his last two seasons at Western Kentucky. While his coverage grade was 78.3 last season, Stout earned a 90.9 run defense grade via PFF. Despite his size, Stout doesn't shy away from tackling, recording 166 career tackles in 45 games.
Between his aggressive attitude as a tackler and athleticism, Stout should compete for a role on the special teams unit as a rookie. If Stout can continue to develop as a nickel corner, it gives the 49ers some much-needed versatility at corner, freeing up Deommodore Lenoir and Green to play on the outside.
