How transition tag works in NFL for Colts QB Daniel Jones originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Indianapolis Colts have taken their next step with Daniel Jones.
It doesn't involve a contract extension or franchise tag, though. Instead, it involves the lesser-known transition tag.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that Jones has had the transition tag placed on him by the Colts.
Jones is coming off an Achilles tear, but he looked like the best option for the Colts at QB going forward, as long as he's healthy.
But how exactly does this work? Here are some answers.

What does the transition tag cost for QB?
According to Schefter, Jones will cost $37.833 million on the transition tag.
That's $6 million cheaper than the QB franchise tag.
It covers just the 2026 season, but it also comes with a catch.
How does the transition tag work?
The transition tag is different than the franchise tag because it allows for negotiations from other teams.
If a team uses the franchise tag, that player is exclusively theirs.
Under this setup, other teams can offer Jones a contract this offseason.
The transition tag allows the Colts to match an offer sheet given to Jones -- so technically, they guarantee themselves the ability to keep him no matter what.
It'll now be fascinating to see if any other teams make him a big offer in free agency.
