The United States trailed 3-1 after one period and never got any closer in a 6-2 loss to unbeaten Finland on Monday. Matt Coronato of the Calgary Flames tied the game 1-1 at the 7:44 mark of the first period before Finland reclaimed the lead a little more than a minute later. Ryan Leonard of the Washington Capitals made it a 5-2 game when he lit the lamp 3:21 into the third period. Joseph Woll of the Toronto Maple Leafs came out after the second period, having surrendered five goals on 10 shots.
Germany dropped its third straight game, falling to host Switzerland 6-1 on Monday. Frederick Tiffels, who plays for German club Eisbären Berlin, prevented the shutout with 4:13 remaining. The Germans were outshot 31-17 in the game, and the Swiss broke open a scoreless game with five goals in the second period, the first three coming in a span of just 3:33.
Edmonton Oilers prospect Isaac Howard leads the United States with two goals in the tournament, while Mathieu Olivier of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Paul Cotter of the New Jersey Devils have three points each. Calgary goalie Devin Cooley, who relieved Woll on Monday, has a 1.22 goals-against average and .947 save percentage in two games. Stefan Loibl of the Straubing Tigers (Germany) has the only other goal for Germany, and Seattle Kraken netminder Philipp Grubauer brings an .898 save percentage and 2.69 GAA into the game.
This is a great hockey matchup that you will not want to miss; make sure to tune in and catch all the action.
