Kansas City grabbed the opener 8-6 on Thursday thanks to Josh Rojas, who was called up from Triple-A earlier in the day and delivered a go-ahead two-run pinch-hit single in the ninth inning.

The victory gave the Royals a 1-0 lead in the four-game series and provided a much-needed boost for a club trying to gain ground in the division race. Michael Massey homered and Carter Jensen added a two-run double in the win, while Kansas City’s bullpen combined for three scoreless innings after a rain delay.
Friday’s matchup is expected to feature veteran right-hander Michael Wacha against Minnesota’s Zebby Matthews.
