Necaxa and Monterrey each have their eyes set on topping the Liga MX Apertura standings with a win on Sunday.

After each winning their opening fixtures in the 2026 Liga MX Apertura, each of Necaxa and Monterrey have a sight at the top of the table ahead of their Week 2 clash. The pair will meet at the Estadio Victoria in Aguascalientes on Sunday as Los Rayados chase a 10th straight win in their head-to-head.
Monterrey’s modern domination of this fixture dates back to January 2022 when it collected a 4-0 win at this same ground. Matias Almeyda may be new to the managerial post but is already displaying potential in Nuevo Leon after earning a 3-2 win over Santos Laguna in his dugout debut last week.
Former Argentina international Lucas Ocampos paved the way to victory in that encounter thanks to his early brace, one of four players already on two goals this term. However, Almeyda will be focused on shoring things up in defense after watching his side leak two goals at home.
Necaxa, meanwhile, edged its way to a dramatic comeback win at home to Atlante last weekend after Miguel Pedroza scored an injury-time winner off the bench. However, Necaxa is fighting history as it looks to stop the rot against Monterrey and earn its first result in this fixture in almost five years.
