Cruz Azul and the Philadelphia Union collide in the Leagues Cup on Thursday, almost two years to the day since their last encounter.

The Philadelphia Union will travel to Cruz Azul on Thursday as each team looks to bolt out of the gates in this year’s Leagues Cup. Interim coach Ryan Richter is chasing a fourth consecutive win in charge of Philadelphia after ending the club’s horrendous run of form recently.
Richter appears to be making improvements in Pennsylvania since replacing Bradley Carnell at the Union helm in late May. Lo and behold, Philadelphia has now gone undefeated since returning to play from the World Cup break and has turned a major corner in the Major League Soccer standings.
Cruz Azul, meanwhile, has only just started the latest Liga MX Apertura and won its first two games before losing at home to Atlante in its most recent outing. La Maquina is also working under new management after Joel Huiqui took charge last month and has displayed his own promise in his first senior coaching role.
Two managerial prospects with bright careers ahead will go head-to-head at Subaru Park in Chester, almost two years after these teams met in their only previous encounter. Cruz Azul won that clash on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time and will seek an even cleaner getaway this time around despite Philadelphia’s recent rise in form.
