The Boston Red Sox nearly had Joe Ryan.
While there are disputes about how close a trade really was last July, there were even posts circulating on social media reporting that Ryan had indeed been traded from the Minnesota Twins to the Red Sox. That wasn't actually the case, but Boston fans had clearly considered that Ryan might be joining their rotation.
That won't be happening this year.
It's not that Ryan is untouchable. It's that the Red Sox have no reason to trade for him.

How Joe Ryan trade update is brutal for Red Sox
ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel wrote in a new article on Monday that the chances Ryan gets traded before the 2026 deadline by the Twins are 55%.
If the Red Sox were in the hunt this season, they could be going after Ryan.
Instead, Boston is probably going to be a seller. They've had a miserable season. And they didn't have Ryan to help stabilize things.
If that Ryan deal went down last year, maybe he would've been steady enough in the early going this season to prevent things from getting quite this bad in Boston.
Instead, he never arrived at Fenway Park in the first place.
"Ryan was one of the lone survivors after the Twins' teardown last deadline -- and Minnesota was deep into discussions on deals involving him, as well," Passan and McDaniel write. "So, a move would surprise nobody, particularly considering that Ryan looks better than ever this season."
ESPN's new article lists nine teams as possible Ryan landing spots this season, including Boston's AL East foe Toronto.
The Red Sox are nowhere to be found, and so a year after nearly getting Ryan, they instead are missing out entirely.
