More importantly, it tied Team USA 1-1 with Canada, and it sent the gold medal game on its way to overtime.

USA-Canada gold medal game OT rules​


Overtime at the Olympics this year in hockey is 3-on-3, for both men and women.

It's sudden death, which means the first goal in OT wins the game, and in this case, the gold medal.

How long is USA-Canada overtime in women's hockey?​


Overtime will be 20 minutes long.

If no goal is scored, the 3-on-3 showdown will continue for 20 minutes, which is only the length at the gold medal game.

Is there a shootout?​


There is no shootout in the gold medal game.

If it goes beyond the 20-minute OT period, the teams will keep playing until the winning goal is scored.
