If the Indianapolis Colts hire retired quarterback Philip Rivers, he would become the oldest player in the NFL this season.
The Colts, who are in desperate need of a quarterback, will bring in Rivers for a workout on Tuesday, Dec. 9, ESPN reported on Monday.
The Colts haven't yet decided to sign Rivers, and Rivers hasn't determined whether he would play, the sports outlet reported.
But if Rivers decides to return to the league, the veteran player, who recently became a grandfather, has a chance to make history.
Rivers turned 44 on Monday, Dec. 8. He was born in 1981.
Yes, Philip Rivers is retired.
Rivers last played in the NFL during the 2020 season with the Indianapolis Colts. He announced his retirement in 2021. In 2025, Rivers signed a one-day contract with the Los Angeles Chargers (formerly San Diego) to officially retire with the team he spent 16 of his 17 NFL seasons with.
Philip Rivers told former NFL coach Jon Gruden he had a 6-month-old grandson in a video posted to Gruden's YouTube channel in May 2025. River's oldest daughter gave birth roughly one year after Rivers and his wife had their youngest child.
Quarterback Brett Favre, who played primarily with the Green Bay Packers, was the first grandfather to play in the NFL, Yahoo Sports reported. Rivers would be the second grandfather to ever play in the NFL.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco is 40 years old. He will turn 41 in January. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the oldest active NFL player. He turned 42 on Dec. 2.
