The New York Jets were an abomination on the defensive side of the ball last season.
General manager Darren Mougey went into the offseason knowing that unit needed more experience and leadership. One of the solutions was to reunite with 37-year-old linebacker Demario Davis, who was originally drafted by the Jets in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Davis has compiled an incredible 1,537 tackles throughout his career. That includes a miraculous nine-year streak of 100+ tackles. Davis ranks eighth on the career list for most games played at linebacker (227). Unfathomably, he's missed one career game due to injury (a hamstring with the New Orleans Saints in 2024).
ESPN recently outlined Davis' commitment to playing football at a high level in a must-read story. Per Davis, he has a six-person team that treats his body. Davis apparently spends $500,000 to $1 million per year on training and recovery.
"My body is my company, and the brand that comes from playing the game is my company," Davis told ESPN. "If I don't reinvest in the engine of the company and the brand of the company, I just don't think that's wise. I just try to be a good steward of what's been given."
This drive is something head coach Aaron Glenn hopes this example set by Davis manages to rub off on his teammates as well.
“He is probably one of the best leaders that I’ve ever been around,” Glenn said earlier this offseason. “Emotionally, man, there are a number of things I can say about that playerbecause of how he carries himself
Davis' ability to defeat Father Time and extend his NFL career is impressive. The Jets are getting an experienced linebacker with the youthful energy Aaron Glenn's defense badly missed last season.
Davis will make a huge impact for the Jets in 2026.
