There are reasons the NFL plays those boring pre-season games. It’s the same concerns that cause major college teams try to start out with a pushover game. It’s so week one doesn’t look like a pre-season game. The absence of that experience leads me to anticipate week one will be brutal from a technical standpoint. I guess some games will be okay but most will likely be filled with procedural penalties and missed opportunities. I written this before but no practice can truly simulate real game conditions.

I expect the Cards’ passing game to suffer the most. No matter how many reps they’ve had the timing between Murray & Hopkins will take a few games. Fortunately Hopkins has one of the best catch radii in the game to cover some of this. Still not hitting him in stride will cost yards and maybe a turnover.

Last season the Cards looked rough in the red zone. The best teams in this regard tend to exhibit precision play. They don’t commit costly penalties and they run precise routes. They don’t miss blocks and they don’t commit turnovers. They never look confused.

Last year’s team was also deficient in clock management. Again this is hard to correct in practices. You need game time conditions so the process can be honed. There’s no question about the Cards being aware of these issues. There is a question about if the Cards have moved passed them.

This team has much better personnel than last year. I expect significant improvement. Still, a week one victory on the road is a big ask. However, if everything stays fairly normal this team should contend for the playoffs.

The Cards redzone, two minute and clock Management all improved as the season wore on.
All teams are going to have the same kind of issues. Running teams might find things a bit less chaotic.
I also think teams are going to scout their opponents based on last years game tapes. That means every phase of the game may be affected by even the slightest change in tendency and could result in big plays.
Running QB’s can mitigate a bit of inconsistencies in the offense.
Yes we will see quite a few procedural penalties and some very sloppy play along with a few blown coverages.

But football is back so let’s enjoy it!

Harry: tell me if you think is right.

Defensive coordinators use their best looks/ schemes for third down, redzone, end of game.

im curious how much of third down, redzone and two minute were the result of Kyler not recognizing things

One thing that concerns me a little is there was no mention of them having a full practice game. I saw several teams had a full game of 1's vs 2's to get them game ready and we didn't do that. Red on White doesn't count because that was mostly 3rd's on 4th's.

To me it's a total unknown. Most of these guys have never done this because as you said in college the first games is generally a mistmatch intentionally.

Last year they beat us twice but both games were extremely competitive. They didn't know what to do with us Kyler only had 150 yards passing but had 67 rushing, 2 TD's passing 1 rushing. We led that game going into the 4th we basically sold out on defense to stop the run and made Jimmy G look like a great QB(save 2 INTs). We lost 2 fumbles in that game or we might have won.

The 2nd game was the debut of Drake, the 49ers were so concerned with Murray that we totally caught them off guard Drake had 110 yards on 15 carries and barely knew the offense. Kyler 240 yards 2 TD's including the long one to Isabella that again was one of the more amazing throws you will ever see.

We lost both games because of having to sell out to stop the run, both games Jimmy G had 4 TD passes, almost 750 yards 8 TD's 2 picks in the 2 games. If our run defense is better I feel like we can stay in the game without selling out.

I think preseason games are going to really show their value and the cuts at the moment will merely be vast roster changes the first part of the season with games that count being the proving grounds for guys testing their metal... teams with good scouting departments might be able to make some steals and Keim as a whole excels past the draft :)

Go look at the highlights.

No you're right I was looking at a ESPN page that had the games in the reverse order!

I'd take the under. 24-17 ish one way or the other. Lots of stalled drives leading to FG's. Bad ST's. Just ugly everywhere on both sides. Winner will the least ugly.

Let’s take end of game first. That was a mess from the top down. KM had the deck stacked against him by his own team. I expect most of that to be fixed. If not there’s a KK problem that might necessitate a true OC.

Red zone was bad because the O-line was weak (still a concern) and the Cards lacked good targets. Hopkins and Daniels changed that. Benjamin may help too as he figures to be a better goal line rusher. Part of the problem was the lack of weapons made the Cards too predictable. Kyler also needs to throw the corner routes better. Again this should be better but not entirely fixed.

Third down looked better as the year went along. Again the improvement in weapons and having Drake all season should help.

There was no question the Cards were easy to scheme against, especially early on. Even the DC’s best looks should now be more challenged.

I think cards win this game. The 9ers WR crew is depleted and I think Cards will be significantly better vs the run. Cards win 24-19.

I also have a really good feeling about Rashard Lawrence. I just feel like he's going to come through for this team big-time and possibly be a candidate for defensive rookie of the year.

I feel the same. Which almost certainly means he doesn't see a snap.

First game was on Halloween night, I know that for a fact because I had my KM #1 Jersey on handing out candy at the door & watching the game. The 2nd game was in SF & we led 16-0 at one point.
