How Derek Carr's potential unretirement would impact Saints with trade talks originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New Orleans Saints are in a much better spot than most teams picking inside the top-10 of the NFL Draft usually are. Not only are they in a good spot with their cap space after years of struggles, but they have good draft pick ammo, and most importantly, a quarterback.
Tyler Shough is finally the future of the franchise, and his ascension after just half a season is giving the Saints plenty of options this offseason. Spencer Rattler might be on the trade block, and he's not the only QB the Saints could trade.
Derek Carr is considering unretiring this offseason, but if he does, the Saints will have a say in his landing spot. ESPN's Ben Solak explains just how the Saints would benefit, and also control the future of Carr in the NFL, even if he does have a landing spot in mind.
How a possible Derek Carr unretirement would impact Saints
"Remember, Carr is still under contract with the Saints, so he isn't free if he unretires," Solak writes. "he has to return to New Orleans, waive his no-trade clause, then get dealt. Presumably not for much, as the Saints don't want to keep his contract on the books..."
The Saints have Carr under contract, even after he retired and was away from the NFL for a year. If he wants to come out of retirement, the Saints will have final say in how that situation is processed.
Carr might decide to come out of retirement to go to a specific team, but it will be a whole lot more complicated than simply signing a contract.
Even if he finds a team willing to give him a chance next year, Carr would still need to waive his no-trade clause and hope the Saints and this new team work out a deal that doesn't impact either team negatively.

He's going to be 35 next season and is currently in the middle of a huge $150 million contract. After his tenure in New Orleans ended on a sour note, Carr's unretirement to then go to a new team will make for an awkward situation.
Carr finding a team interested in acquiring him for a season or two would be a mild surprise. He's been out of the league for a year, is under contract on a big deal, and doesn't bring the upside that some of the other quarterback options bring.
This situation will be one to keep a close eye on this offseason, and a Carr unretirement saga could be one of the more interesting QB storylines of the offseason.
