Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr recently reflected on his time in New Orleans. While there were some positives and plenty of focus on football, one of his biggest regrets had nothing to do with what happened on the field.
Carr said on The Rush with Maxx Crosby that he wished he had embraced the community side of New Orleans earlier after joining the Saints. He admitted that when he first arrived, he was so focused on football that he didn't dive into the community the way he had during his early days with the Las Vegas Raiders.
“I wish, man, more than anything, when we first got there, I was so focused on the football that I didn't really get to the community aspect like I did with the Raiders that first six months,” Carr said. “And I wish I did that sooner.”
Carr made it clear that he and his family found ways to give back, saying they "helped bless a lot of families and people out there." Still, looking back, he acknowledged that he wished he had given back sooner while in New Orleans.
"That's one thing I look back on," Carr said. "Man, I wish I did that sooner."
The 35-year-old former quarterback, who was rumored earlier this offseason to be eying a comeback, spoke highly of Saints owner Gayle Benson, calling her one of the kindest people he'd ever met. He remembered meeting Benson with his wife, Heather, saying that interaction made his decision to come to New Orleans easy.
