For the United States Men's National Team, it doesn't appear there's much extra motivation needed as their 2026 World Cup continues. Following a dominant 4-1 victory over Paraguay, the USMNT's performance has been touted by many as one of the most impressive of the opening round of games in group play. However, their upcoming opponent, Australia, also deserves a tip of the cap for a stellar showing in a 2-0 victory over Turkey.

While both teams enter the matchup on Friday with three points, a few comments from well-known names on the Australian football side have surfaced. First, it was Simon Hill, who's widely known as one of the most popular commentators in Australia, who referenced possibly shutting the "loudest of mouths in the United States," as SEN.com detailed.

“It was nice to shut a few mouths. It would be even nicer to shut the loudest of mouths in the United States," Hill said.

However, that was just the first comment, surely giving the USMNT notice of how the Socceroos feel about this matchup.

Australian defender Kai Trewin sounds off on USMNT matchup

The battle atop Group D has drawn plenty of attention, but when Australian defender Kai Trewin was asked if he's ever wanted to win a game more than the upcoming one against the United States, his answer left no doubt, as he even doubled down on his statement.

"No, I've never wanted to win a game more than this one," Trewin said. "I can tell you that for free. I've never wanted to win a game more than I've wanted to win this game against the US, for sure."

Of course, there are likely several reasons for this. One of the most obvious is that if the winner of this game were to sit with six points and be in a clear pole position to win the group at the 2026 World Cup. However, there's been no shortage of confidence and buzz surrounding this USMNT following their victory over Paraguay, which is almost certainly playing a role in these comments.

While the importance of the matchup between the United States and Australia is apparent, it's hard not to be impressed by the two sides, and the buzz surrounding Mauricio Pochettino's squad continues to build.
