How Angels can demand more for 3.68 ERA lefty starter than Tigers can for Tarik Skubal originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
At the 2026 MLB trade deadline, there will be a focus on two main positions: right-handed hitting outfielders and starting pitching. Specifically, teams will want controllable starters.
The Los Angeles Angels can fulfill both of those top needs for teams this summer if they sell. Jo Adell is one name to watch, but the Angels also have a pair of starters they could trade. But what could they get for one of those pitchers?
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Angels could demand more for 3.68 ERA left-handed starter, Reid Detmers, than the Detroit Tigers could for Tarik Skubal at this year's trade deadline.
How Angels could get more in trade for Reid Detmers than Tigers for Tarik Skubal
"If the Angels changed their mind and made Detmers available, they could demand a package greater than the one the Tigers will receive for two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal," Nightengale writes.
How could the Angels get more for Detmers than the Tigers for Skubal, considering Skubal is significantly better than Detmers?
It's simple: control. Skubal is a rental who has no plans to sign an extension before hitting free agency and cashing in with one of the biggest deals signed by any starting pitcher in MLB history.
Since Skubal is a three-month rental at best, the Tigers can't ask for as much as they normally would want in exchange for who might be the best left-handed pitcher in baseball.

Detmers, on the other hand, is under club control through the 2028 season, giving teams 2.5 years with the left-hander, which is a lot more worthwhile than what Skubal could bring in just a couple of months.
Now, it might be hard for the Angels to successfully get more in exchange for Detmers than the Tigers could get for Skubal, but they do have the means to ask for a huge haul in return for the left-hander.
The Angels might demand more for Detmers, but there's no telling if the Angels could get such a huge haul, let alone if they plan to trade him. But it will be very fascinating to see a comparison in the returns if both Detmers and Skubal are traded.
