There’s a moment from Spa that captures exactly where Formula 1 has arrived. George Russell, one of the most technically precise drivers on the grid, was reduced to near tears trying to explain why his Mercedes was slower in a straight line than his rookie teammate’s. Not slower through setup choices. Not slower because of a mechanical fault anyone could point to. Slower because the software decided it should be.

Diagnostics carried out after the race weekend eventually surfaced the problem – a deployment glitch exiting La Source that gutted acceleration onto the Kemmel Straight and ultimately put the driver in contact with Lewis Hamilton. Race over before it started, courtesy of an algorithm.

That is the 2026 Formula 1 season in a sentence.

The Car Knows Better Than You Do​


The new power units split propulsion roughly 53% combustion to 47% electric, and managing that balance is no longer a job for the driver. The control electronics at the heart of each car now run self-learning algorithms that track wind, grip levels, tire condition, driver inputs, and lap history in real time, then determine exactly when electric power gets deployed and when it gets harvested back. The system is forward-planning, not reacting – it builds a predictive model of the lap and acts on it. Drivers can hit an override boost button, but the underlying logic is the computer’s, not theirs.

Oscar Piastri discussed the change after Belgium, noting that qualifying had effectively become a question of whose computer behaved on a given afternoon. “Even with the previous hybrid engines, there was a big element of learning, coding and AI, to some extent,” Piastri told the media. What’s changed in 2026 is the degree of autonomy. Engineers at multiple teams have reported baffling straight-line speed differentials between identically-specced cars that can’t be explained by hardware or setup – only by software behaving differently to the same inputs.

The practical consequences are already rewriting how the sport works. Max Verstappen reportedly held back from a pass at Suzuka because completing the overtake would have drained the battery and handed the position straight back on the following straight. Lando Norris has said the system can push a car past another without the driver intending it – which is exactly what happened when he got past Hamilton at Spa. The FIA’s own rulebook states that a driver must race alone and unaided. That principle is currently closer to aspiration than regulation.

What the FIA Can and Can’t Do About It​


The 2026 regulations run through 2030. Tweaks scheduled for 2027 and 2028 will nudge the power balance back toward roughly 60% combustion, but they won’t touch the AI-governed deployment architecture. The computers stay. The self-learning energy managers stay. The drivers adapt or fall behind.

Meanwhile, the commercial layer is moving in the same direction as the technical one. Eight new AI partnership deals were signed across F1’s eleven teams in just the first half of 2026. Williams is running Anthropic’s Claude model, Red Bull‘s Oracle relationship has evolved into an agentic strategy system that surfaces race information autonomously, and McLaren‘s Google tie-up has changed from Pixel hardware promotions to Gemini. Technology sponsorship reached an estimated $769 million across the sport last season – up 41% year on year – and total F1 sponsorship spend is projected to crack $3 billion for the first time in 2026, driven largely by tech entrants. The money and the software are pointing the same direction.

The FIA does have Article 19.1 on the books – the “driver alone and unaided” clause – but enforcement would require the governing body to draw a line through every layer of energy management software that teams have spent years building. Nobody seriously expects that to happen before the next regulation cycle. Four more seasons of this is a long time to spend watching the sport’s best drivers apologize for what their computers did.

Formula 1 has always sold itself on the idea that the person strapped inside the machine is the decisive element. In 2026, that story is getting harder to tell with a straight face.
