The Houston Texans have parted ways with quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson, a source told the Houston Chronicle.

Johnson had served in that role since 2023 when coach DeMeco Ryans became head coach. His primary responsibility was helping develop C.J. Stroud, whom he had met when Stroud was a junior in high school.

But there was a desire from both Johnson and the Texans' offensive staff to move on. The move happened prior to the combine.

Senior offensive assistant and pass game specialist Jerry Schuplinski, who is offensive coordinator Nick Caley's right hand man, is expected to have the quarterbacks coach role added to his duties, the source said.

Johnson is a Houston native and played college football at Texas A&M. He was considered a young up-and-coming coach with a bright future when he was hired.

He is still highly regarded, as he interviewed for several vacant offensive coordinator roles this hiring cycle. He helped Stroud have one of the best rookie seasons of all-time in 2023. However, he struggled in his second season.

The move, though big, isn't a huge surprise. Stroud showed improvements in 2025, but he threw four interceptions in the team's playoff loss to the Patriots. It is arguably the biggest move of the 2026 offeseason for the Texans, as they try to improve their offense.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
