The Houston Astros are now in a 1-1 series against the San Diego Padres after falling on Saturday night. Heading into Sunday's matchup, the Astros are hoping to bounce back and take the series if they can pull off a win.

As the Astros prepare for Sunday night, it is important to note that there are a few injuries worth checking in on, with one possibly having a key impact on the outcome of the game.

As of now, the Astros' injury report includes first baseman Christian Walker, right-handed pitcher Mike Burrows, outfielder Brice Matthews, shortstop Carlos Correa, and left-handed pitcher Brandon Walter.

First up, Walker is a new name on the injury report as he was hit by a pitch on his right hand/finger area in last night's game and at this point is considered day-to-day. The pitch that hit Walker was going 101.6 miles per hour and occurred in the ninth inning. At some point before today's game, there should be an update as Walker was evaluated by postgame doctors last night.

Burrows, on the other hand, will not play as his return is still to be determined due to his right elbow neuritis injury that placed him on the 15-day IL list on July 13th, which is retroactive to July 7th. It is important to note that Burrows did throw 55 pitches (three innings) at the Astros facility in West Palm Beach, Florida, last night. Following that, the next step in this process is a rehab start with Triple-A Sugar Land.

For Matthews, he is still recovering from the knee sprain that placed him on the 10-day IL list on July 17th, with a current expected return of the third week in August. In terms of status, Matthews has been hitting, fielding ground balls, and running, with the next step being to get him on the bases.

Correa is also working on getting back, as he is still recovering from the peroneus brevis tendon repair surgery that he had done on his left ankle, which placed him on the IL list on May 6th and was moved to the 60-day IL list on June 2nd. Right now, it does seem that Correa could have an opportunity to return in 2026, but there is no guarantee of that.

As far as Correa's status goes, he has begun taking dry swings, and according to manager Joe Espada, Correa will begin tee work soon to continue his rehab process.

The final injury to keep in mind is Walter and his torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow, which put him on the 60-day IL list on March 25th. As a result of Walter's injury, he underwent Tommy John Surgery on September 25th, 2025, which very likely leaves him out for the rest of the season with an expected return at some point in 2027.

As the Astros prepare for the series finale with the Padres, the main injury to watch will be Walker and how his right-hand injury affects him when he is up to bat, as well as on defense.

Heading into tonight, the Astros sit at 60-58 and No. 1 in the AL West, but the Texas Rangers are just behind them with a record of 59-58 which does put pressure on Houston to keep winning and consistently play well.

If the Astros are able to pick up a win tonight and perform well on both offense and defense, that would be critical for confidence and momentum and would help create more of a cushion between the Astros and the Texas Rangers for the lead in the AL West.
