ORLANDO, Fla. -- Charlotte Hornets coach Charles Lee said Friday that the team has been pleased with the recent performances of rookie Liam McNeeley in the G League.

McNeeley is averaging 19.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.3 assists, one steal and one block on 40% shooting from the field in four appearances with the Greensboro Swarm. He is among 13 2025 first-round picks to suit up in the G League this season.

Lee had the chance to watch McNeeley play with the Swarm on Dec. 19 in the G League Winter Showcase at the Orange County Convention Center. Lee was particularly impressed with his defensive intensity and impact in that loss to the Grand Rapids Gold.

He has gotten some extended minutes with them, which is great for young players. It is nice when he can go out and play through some mistakes, maybe get 25-30 minutes, and earn a little more opportunity to play. I've noticed defensively with him, there has been a mindset of trying to impact that side of the ball a lot more. I think Liam has a really good and high basketball IQ and has a good feel for the game. A lot of times, he is in the right spots; he can just have more activity and physicality behind it to be more impactful, and I think I saw that from his stint in Greensboro.

McNeeley has played sporadically with the Hornets, averaging 4.8 points and 2.3 rebounds in 13.1 minutes across 20 games. The team assigned him to the Swarm to log playing time and work on various elements of his game on the court.

The 29th pick has tallied at least 15 points in each game with the Swarm, to go along with two double-doubles. He debuted with 24 points and 11 rebounds on Dec. 12 and followed that performance with 16 points and 12 assists on Dec. 12.

McNeeley has played at a high level with the Swarm, showcasing his playmaking and scoring. The team has liked the way he has performed and wants to see him continue to evolve on the offensive end of the court.

"I think we'd like him to continue to hunt catch-and-shoot 3s," Lee said. "He has a really nice shot. I think that if he starts there, it is going to open up everything else in his game because he did a phenomenal job of making the right rim reads, paint reads. ... He is doing a really good job of playing the pass, but I also want him to be a little bit more hunting 3s."
