Apr. 16—GRAND FORKS — The UND visit didn't start well for Hopkins (Minn.) guard Anthony Smith III.

The Smith family experienced car trouble heading west on Interstate 94 and was stuck in Albany, Minn.

"Some random nice lady had to picks us up," Smith III said. "It's a pretty amazing story."

After hitching a ride from a helpful stranger to Grand Forks, Smith III liked what he saw from Paul Sather's staff and the Fighting Hawks program, committing to UND.

"They were looking at me for a year, and it's crazy with two of my best friends — the Curtis twins — going to North Dakota," Smith III said of St. Louis Park twins Marley and Micah Curtis. "I went to one of the (UND) games with them, and I was talking to coach after the game and he said he was really interested in me. Then they saw me on the (AAU) circuit and Sather texted me after a circuit."

Smith III said he was also being recruited by St. Thomas, Iona, Milwaukee and Bradley.

"It's just a family," Smith III said of UND. "Right when I stepped on campus, I knew that's where I wanted to be. I love it. The facilities, everything is amazing."

As a senior, Smith III averaged more than 24 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game while hitting 3-pointers at a clip of better than 42 percent.

He scored 1,958 career points at Hopkins, which lost to Wayzata in the section championship. Wayzata was responsible for both Hopkins' losses last season.

Smith III was a Top 10 Minnesota Mr. Basketball finalist and the Star Tribune recently called him "one of the best players in Minnesota."

"I would say I'm a crafty guard who can score on all three levels," Smith III said. "I can make the good read and handle all the spacing and movements. I'm truly a shifty guard who can score."

As is the case many years, Hopkins has a number of players with Division I talent. Fellow guard Jayden Moore and post Ahmed Nur have fielded power conference offers.

Smith III is hoping for a chance to play early in his career.

"I have a shot to play, but my main thing is putting on weight," he said. "I have the skill set. It's whatever coach needs me to do. I'm so excited. I can't wait to get to Grand Forks. It's a lot of stress off my mind. I'm so excited to be on campus. I can't wait."

Smith III spends a lot of time working out with the Curtis twins.

"They're very fun to be around," Smith III said. "They're crazy players to watch. There's nobody like them that has the athleticism and the dog in them."
