HOLLAND - While the Hope College men's basketball team has played well for most of the year defensively, the team has been forced to play catch-up because of slow starts by the offense.
The Flying Dutchmen finally put together a dominating start, starting the game on a 15-0 run to beat Alma College 80-64 on Saturday, Jan. 17, at DeVos Fieldhouse.
This is the kind of game Hope needed to prove they are MIAA title contenders.
Beating Trine was big, but with another matchup there and two against Calvin and the rest of the league's improvement, every win is huge and any loss could be costly in the hunt for the MIAA title.
Hope is 4-0 in the MIAA and 8-6 overall.

Hope hasn't won the regular-season MIAA title since 2002, though the Flying Dutchmen have claimed three of the past four MIAA Tournament titles to reach the NCAA Division III Tournament.
A regular-season title brings the MIAA Tournament to DeVos Fieldhouse, which is a huge advantage for Hope.
The Dutchmen have struggled to shoot, especially from 3-point range this season, but came out Saturday and nailed seven 3s in the first half.
After a couple of baskets from Parker Hovey, Brandon Cargill and Orion Yant hit 3-pointers and Hope led 15-0 before the Scots could find the bottom of the basket.
The scoring wasn't just Hovey and Marcus Wourman, it came from everyone.
Hovey had 11 points and nine rebounds. Cargill scored 13, Yant had 10 and Avery Sanchez added 10.
This story will be updated with the women's game upon completion.
