ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Sectional Tournament basketball wins are exhilarating when you when and heartbreaking when you lose. That second one was the case for the Hononegah girls Tuesday night at the 4A Guilford Sectional. Hononegah lost by a point to Mundelein Carmel 40-39 in a semifinal game.

The Indians took a two-point lead on a three-point basket by sophomore Madison Olson with 1:02 to play in the game, but the Corsairs answered at the other end with a three-pointer from the corner to regain the lead by a point.

Hononegah eventually inbounded the ball under its own basket with 7.4 seconds to play. The Indians got the ball to their top scorer Ainsley Hughes, but her running shot on the baseline skimmed across both sides of the rim and dropped off leaving Hononegah out of time and out chances.

Hughes scored 15 points. Olson scored 12 points for Hononegah. Hononegah ends its season with a record of 26-8 and a NIC-10 championship.
