RUSHVILLE — A field with a reputation for being hitter friendly lived up to its reputation on March 27.
Taylor Smeck's grand slam on a raw, blustery day in eastern Fairfield County was the highlight of Fairfield Union's 17-7 win against visiting Crooksville in a nonleague high school softball game.
Ella Harmon added a homer, two doubles and single with four RBIs for Fairfield Union, which held a 12-5 edge in hits and took advantage of nine walks from four Ceramics pitchers.
Kellie Caton had a double and single with an RBI out of the No. 9 hole to pace Crooksville (3-2); freshman Khloe Watts had two singles and drove in a run.

West M 9, Morgan 8: Gabbi Hammer's two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning was the critical blow in the Tornadoes' comeback win in a Muskingum Valley League crossover in Falls Township.
Hammer's homer came with the Raiders leading, 8-7. She also had an RBI double; No. 3 hitter Payton Brown had a double and two singles as West improved to 2-0.
Allia Rush struck out 11 in a losing cause for the Raiders (1-1, 0-1 MVL-Big), while she also carried the offense with a homer, two doubles and single.
Morgan, which also got a homer from Kaydence Maxwell and a double and single from Payton Drobina, lost despite an 11-8 edge in hits and six West errors.
John Glenn 5, Crooksville 1: Kendall Snider launched a solo homer and struck out 14 in a complete game for the Muskies in an MVL road win in McLuney.
Crooksville led 1-0 after Elyse Baker singled in a run in the first, but the Snider, who tossed a two-hitter, controlled things the rest of the way.
Snider's homer tied the game in the third, and the Muskies got a deciding two-run single from Cora Dever in a four-run fourth to pull away.
Addison Babcock doubled twice, Estelle Matheney doubled and Snider also singled for John Glenn.
Baker struck out six and yielded two earned runs in a complete game.
Meadowbrook 6, Philo 5: The Electrics (1-2, 0-2 MVL-Big) took a second straight hard-luck loss in the MVL, as Chloe Callahan's two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning secured the Colts' comeback win in a crossover in Byesville.
Kyleigh McGraw cracked a two-run homer to give Philo a 2-1 lead in the fourth, a lead that grew to 5-1 in the fifth on McGraw's RBI single.
Cassedy Himes took the loss as Philo was hurt by six errors that led to four unearned runs.
Tri-Valley 29, Maysville 13: The visiting Scotties trailed, 11-3, after two innings in an MVL crossover, but Camdyn Tyson piled up seven RBIs in a comeback win in Newton Township.
Tyson, a catcher, belted a homer, doubled twice and had a two-run single among her team-high five hits. Alivia Reffit and Larsyn Holdsworth combined for four hits and eight RBIs, as Tri-Valley had 16 hits and drew 14 walks.
Kaelynne Mitton collected a triple and double and Lily Westfall drove in a four runs with a double and single for Maysville (3-1, 0-1 MVL-Small), which had 13 hits.
River View 7, New Lexington 3: Kelsey McClellan singled two home two runs in the first inning and the Lady Bears never looked back in an MVL crossover win on the road.
Hallie Wallace doubled and singled with an RBI and Aurora Yoder singled one in for River View (2-1, 1-0 MVL-Big), which scored four times in the fourth to break a 2-all tie. Haylee Hall went the distance with five strikeouts to get the win.
Jorja Burkhart had two triples with two RBIs to continue her fast start for the Panthers (1-3, 1-1 MVL-Small). Mia Metzger took the loss.
Sheridan 6, Coshocton 1: Megan Ranck tossed a one-hitter and slugged a two-run double in a three-run second inning for the Generals, who emerged with an MVL crossover win on the road.
Brooke Cadigan and Riley Nicely added doubles for Sheridan. Ranck, replacing graduated Cora Hall as the team's ace pitcher, struck out eight and walked one.
Savannah Gambill's solo homer accounted for the only hit for Coshocton (0-3). Gambill went the distance in defeat, allowing seven hits and four earned runs.
