Holger Rune will not be able to make his comeback from injury at Wimbledon, the Danish tennis player has said.
Former world number four Rune ruptured his Achilles tendon in October during a match against Frenchman Ugo Humbert in Stockholm and he said in a statement late Thursday he is not quite ready yet to return.
Rune had initially planned to return last month at the Hamburg clay court event but was stopped by knee problems.
"Missing Wimbledon is not an easy decision, but the long-term goal remains unchanged: To return stronger and ready to compete at the highest level," Rune said late Thursday on Instagram.
"I am getting closer every day, and it is very satisfying to feel the progress.
Rune's mother, Aneke Rune, said in the statement: "After careful consideration, we have decided that Holger will not play at Wimbledon this year.
"His rehabilitation continues to progress very well. Both his Achilles tendon and knee are responding positively, and he is making steady progress in all areas. His movement on the court is improving all the time and he is now able to train at high level for extended periods without any issues."
Rune is the second prominent absentee at Wimbledon as twice champion Carlos Alcaraz is still sidelined with a wrist injury which also made him miss the French Open. The grass court grand slam starts on June 29.
