Glenn may fly under the radar as one of the better programs in Central Texas.
When Dallas Hernandez hit a game-winning shot with 1 second left Tuesday against Corpus Christi Flour Bluff, it put the Grizzlies into a regional final for the second straight season and for the third time in the last six years.
On the heels of a 14-0 run through District 25-5A, it’s been quite the second half of the season for the Grizzlies (29-9), who have only lost once since Dec. 12.
“It is exciting,” said Glenn coach Jon Ortiz, whose team is in Division I for the playoffs. “It’s obviously been a goal of ours to return to (the regional final). We still have more that we want to accomplish, but we’re happy that we’ve kind of checked that box to be back here again.”
Orden Roberts recorded a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds and Hernandez finished with 14 points to lead the Grizzlies in the 49-47 victory over Flour Bluff, but Ortiz was more impressed with his team’s defense, particularly forward Aiden Brooks.
“That’s been a big point of emphasis going into the postseason, is defending and rebounding,” he said. “I think every single team in the playoffs is talking about those two things, but you really have to commit to it. Because playoff games are a little lower scoring and a little bit more physical.”
The game was tight throughout, with multiple lead changes. But Hernandez provided the heroics at the most important time.
“We were holding the ball for the last shot, and he was able to get a drive,” Ortiz said. “He got an angle off the glass and knocked it in, and I thought he was fouled on top of it. … He’s got four years worth of games behind him and there’s not really a situation he hasn’t seen. It’s the same for Orden. Those guys bring a lot of experience.”
Both Justin Lee and Hudson Roberts finished with six points for Glenn, who plays Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Cuero.
Wimberley 106, Brownsville Jubilee 62: The Texans cruised into the Class 4A Division II regional finals with an easy win Tuesday. Nathan Baker (17 points), Holden Crawford (17), Paul Gumbert-Mendoza (16), Camden Hopkins (15) and Harley Peacock (15) all reached double figures in scoring for Wimberley (36-2), who faces La Marque on Friday at Bryan Rudder.
