Waxahachie players await pitcher Maci Barnes (22) to congratulate her at the plate after her solo home run against Duncanville. Waxahachie won, 14-4. The two teams played their District 11-6A softball game at Waxahachie Softball Field, on the campus of waxahachie High School, 3001 US HWY 287 bypass in Waxahachie on March 27, 2026. (Steve Hamm)

Game of the day

Flower Mound was the top-ranked Class 6A softball team in the preseason Dallas-area rankings. After a 22-1 start, Denton Guyer took over the top spot in those rankings when The Dallas Morning News unveiled its first poll of the regular season this week.

Both teams were deserving of that No. 1 ranking, as both were state semifinalists last season - Flower Mound in 6A Division I and Guyer in 6A Division II.

On Friday they went head-to-head for the second time this season, with first place in District 5-6A on the line. The game went right down to the wire.

Annaleeia Martinez and Madison Mettille had RBI singles in a four-run top of the ninth as Guyer won a thriller 9-5 and extended its district lead over Flower Mound to two games. It also gave Guyer a 10-game winning streak and a two-game sweep of its two district matchups with Flower Mound.

With Guyer (23-1, 8-0) two outs from defeat, Notre Dame signee Finley Montgomery hit a two-run single to cap a three-run top of the seventh as Guyer took a 5-4 lead. That came two batters after Chloe O'Brien hit a bases-loaded RBI single to bring Guyer to within 4-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Nahla Hurst led off with a single and scored on an RBI triple by Ole Miss signee Adi Bicknell, an all-state shortstop. Guyer intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases with no outs, but Flower Mound (16-8-1, 6-2) couldn't score and win it, as a fielder's choice grounder and double play ended the threat and forced extra innings.

Montgomery pitched a complete game and threw 151 pitches, according to Guyer's GameChanger box score. She came into Friday with a 16-1 record, a 1.01 ERA and 183 strikeouts in 97 1/3 innings, but Flower Mound had eight hits and drew six walks against her.

Audra Kruk was the starting pitcher for Flower Mound, even though all-state pitcher Bella Flores returned to the lineup last week after missing the first part of the season. Flores came on in relief in the third and escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam by getting a pop out and strikeout to keep Flower Mound ahead 3-2, and Flores ended up pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing four runs.

Flower Mound scored three runs against Montgomery in the bottom of the first to go up 3-1, as Melody Shah capped the inning with a two-out RBI single. Flower Mound extended its lead to 4-2 on a two-out RBI triple by Bicknell, who was 3 for 5.

Spotlight

The Keller baseball team, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 6A, pulled off an improbable comeback to stun Southlake Carroll 9-8. And after a seven-run top of the seventh, Keller survived Carroll scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh and leaving the bases loaded to end it.

Bodie Davis hit a go-ahead three-run double to break a 4-4 tie in the top of the seventh for Keller. Keller trailed 4-2 with two on and two outs in the seventh, one out from defeat.

Three straight walks, including bases-loaded walks to Carson Lesley and Trevor Sumrall, tied it 4-4 before Davis delivered the biggest hit of the game. An RBI double by Tennessee pledge Cole Koeninger brought in two runs, with the second scoring on an error to make it 9-4.

Carroll scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but reliever Mason Brower got a fly out with the bases loaded to end the game. Koeninger started and pitched five scoreless innings while striking out 11, and he went 3 for 5.

Softball

Kennedy Bradley, Melissa: The Florida signee was 3 for 3 with two home runs, a double, three runs and seven RBIs as the nation's seventh-ranked team beat Greenville 15-0 in three innings and extended its winning streak to 16 games. Bradley has 13 home runs on the season after she set the Dallas-area single-season record by hitting 24 home runs last year. Back-to-back state champion Melissa (21-2) also got home runs from Auburn pledge Amariee "Shug" Bradford, Bradyn Young and Oklahoma pledge Finlee Williams and now has 58 home runs in 23 games a year after breaking the high school national record for most home runs in a season with 122 in 39 games.

Hope "Lillie" Gaudio and Katelyn Moreaux, Mansfield Legacy: Both players homered twice, and Moreaux was 3 for 3 with six RBIs and Gaudio was 3 for 3 with five RBIs in a 16-0, three-inning rout of North Crowley. Gaudio, an all-state shortstop who is committed to LSU, now has 13 home runs in 25 games. She is 10 for 11 with five home runs and 14 RBIs in the last four games.

Michaela Landers, Waxahachie: She hit her 19th home run of the season - a grand slam in a six-run bottom of the fourth - to give Waxahachie the lead for good as the state's fifth-ranked 6A team rallied to beat Duncanville 14-4. Landers, who was 1 for 1 with three walks and five RBIs, is now 10 for 11 with eight home runs and 22 RBIs in the last four games. Madison Lee hit a two-out grand slam in the top of the third to give Duncanville a 4-2 lead, but after walking Landers in her first two at-bats, they pitched to her with the bases loaded in the fourth and paid for it. Maci Barnes pitched a five-inning complete game, struck out 12 and homered as Waxahachie improved to 27-1.

Gisela Boitmann, Lovejoy: The Auburn pledge pitched a three-hitter, struck out 10 and was 1 for 2 with two RBIs as the area's second-ranked 5A team beat Anna 12-2 in five innings.
