Kiké Hernández is nearing a return to the Los Angeles Dodgers after continuing his rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday.
Playing against Sacramento, the Triple-A affiliate for the San Francisco Giants, the veteran utility player collected two hits, including a double, as he continued working his way back from a left oblique strain that has sidelined him for nearly two months.
Hernández began his rehab assignment on July 17 and is expected to remain with Oklahoma City through at least the weekend. If he continues progressing without any setbacks, he could be activated during the Dodgers' upcoming homestand, which begins Tuesday.
The injury has limited Hernández to just two major-league games this season.
His year began on the Injured List while recovering from offseason elbow surgery, delaying his season debut until May 25. Unfortunately, his return was short-lived as he suffered an oblique injury during his second game back and has not appeared in the majors since.
While Hernández's offensive production has been put on hold by the injuries, his versatility remains one of his biggest assets.
Throughout his career, the veteran has filled every role the Dodgers have asked of him, providing defensive flexibility across the infield and outfield while delivering timely offensive contributions.
His ability to move around the diamond has often allowed manager Dave Roberts to mix and match lineups depending on pitching matchups and late-game situations.
With the regular season entering its final months, the Dodgers could soon receive another experienced contributor capable of strengthening both their bench and defensive depth.
Friday's multi-hit performance was another encouraging sign that Hernández is regaining his timing at the plate while continuing to increase his workload.
Assuming the remainder of his rehab assignment goes as planned, the veteran appears poised to return to Los Angeles in the coming days, giving the Dodgers another versatile option as they prepare for the stretch run.
