As the NBA community awaits the potential trade of Giannis Antetokounmpo, a bigger story took over the basketball world Monday morning.
The Dallas Maverickshave reached an agreement to hire Michigan coach Dusty May to fill their vacancy, according to a source who confirmed the imminent announcement to The Detroit News.
May's hiring comes a month after the Mavericks and Jason Kidd came to a mutual decision to part ways after five seasons. May's decision to jump to the NBA comes after he had verbally committed to return to the Wolverines following their national-championship run this spring.
May's decision to leave the Wolverines for the Mavericks is sensible for both parties.
For May, he receives the chance to lead a Mavericks team that has been fully committed to rebuilding its franchise for nearly two years, since the February 2025 trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
May will lead a young team in Dallas, coaching rising star Cooper Flagg, the NBA's reigning rookie of the year. The Mavericks also will have a chance to add to their young core during the 2026 NBA Draft on Tuesday night, with the No. 9 overall pick. They also hold the No. 30 and No. 48 selections.
Given that player development was one of May's key strengths during his two-year tenure at Michigan, it is likely the primary reason the Mavericks tapped him. May's leadership and communication with his players and staff added to his desirability as a candidate.
May's arrival in Dallas coincides with the Mavericks' hiring of Masai Ujiri as president and governor, a role he took over in May. The influx of new faces in the organization marks the beginning of a new era for the Mavericks.
May's hiring by the Mavericks makes him the first college head coach to transition to an NBA head coach since John Beilein left Michigan for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019. Beilein resigned late in his first season with the Cavaliers. May will attempt to become just the second head coach in history to win both an NCAA national championship and an NBA title, following in the footsteps of Larry Brown. Brown won the NCAA title as the head coach of Kansas in 1988 and later claimed his sole NBA championship with the Pistons in 2004.
