Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams ironed out a revised contract last week, clearing a path for the veteran quarterback to keep playing in 2027. The structure of the deal doesn’t guarantee Stafford will return for his 19th NFL season next year, but now that he’s under contract through 2027, it makes it much easier for him to run it back.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network laid out some details of Stafford’s deal, including the $10 million incentives that are available to the reigning MVP. They’re not tied to his individual performance at all, but strictly to the team’s success.
According to Pelissero, Stafford can earn $2.5 million for winning the NFC championship and another $2.5 million for winning the Super Bowl next season, so long as he plays at least 70% of the snaps in each game. Those same incentives apply in 2027 if he returns.
So in total, he has an extra $10 million available to earn through incentives in the next two years. Stafford doesn’t need any added motivation to win another ring (or two), but it helps to have $10 million up for grabs if he adds two more world championships.
In the event that Stafford plays two more years and wins the Super Bowl both times, he’ll earn a total of $105 million over the next two years. If he doesn’t earn any incentives, his new deal will be worth $95 million for two years.
Either way, that’s a good value for the 2025 NFL MVP, even at the age of 38. He’s playing better than he ever has and doesn’t appear to be slowing down whatsoever.
