Northern Illinois coach Thomas Hammock is leaving his alma mater to join the Seattle Seahawks as running backs coach and senior offensive assistant, ending a seven-year run with the Huskies, according to multiple reports Wednesday.
For Notre Dame fans, Hammock is best known for engineering Northern Illinois’ stunning 16-14 upset of No. 5 Notre Dame in South Bend in 2024, a result widely regarded as one of the biggest shocks of that college football season and NIU’s first win over a top-10 opponent.
In the aftermath of that game, Hammock and Irish coach Marcus Freeman formed a bond, with Hammock offering feedback and support that Freeman later accepted. “We’ve talked on the phone multiple times, exchanged text messages,” Hammock said last fall, adding that he wants to see Freeman win a national championship.
Hammock previously served as running backs coach for the Baltimore Ravens from 2014–18, where he worked alongside current Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald, a relationship that helped pave his return to the NFL. NIU defensive coordinator Rob Harley is expected to serve as interim head coach.
