Atlanta Hawks rookie Asa Newell set a new career high in scoring on Saturday in the G League, leading the College Park Skyhawks to their fifth straight victory.
Newell finished with 36 points, seven rebounds and one steal in the 129-98 win over the Westchester Knicks at the Westchester County Center. He shot 13-of-19 from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range, in nearly 33 minutes of work.
The 23rd overall pick tallied 23 points in the first quarter alone, helping the Skyhawks build a 68-56 advantage at halftime. He was aggressive in the paint offensively and served as an effective lob threat while also spacing the floor.
Newell has played sporadically for the Hawks, averaging five points and two rebounds in 40 appearances for coach Quin Snyder. He became the fifth-youngest player in franchise history to register a double-double after recording 12 points and 10 rebounds on Oct. 25 (20 years, 20 days).
The former Georgia forward is averaging 22.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and two assists while shooting 58.7% from the field in 13 games with the Skyhawks. He has registered five double-doubles, including a 29-point, 12-rebound and seven-assist effort on Jan. 21.
With playing time at a premium, Newell has had the chance to log extended minutes and stay in a rhythm on the court. The organization will likely look to provide him with continued opportunities with the Skyhawks over the remainder of the G League season.
