No. 2 Hawaii improved to 9-0 away from home this season by sweeping No. 5 UC Irvine by 25-22 scores in all three sets in men’s volleyball on Saturday night at Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif.
Sophomore opposite Kristian Titriyski put down a season-high 20 kills to help Hawaii remain undefeated in Big West play at 6-0.
Hawaii (23-3 overall) swept the Anteaters (15-5, 5-5) on the road after doing the same two weeks ago to its other top rival in the conference in Long Beach State.
The Warriors can secure the No. 1 seed in the Outrigger Big West Men’s Volleyball Championship as early as next week when they play their final two regular-season road matches at UC San Diego.
“I don’t know if we’ve ever gone 4-0 on the road against (UCI and LBSU) since the Big West has started,” Hawaii coach Charlie Wade said in a post-match Zoom media call. “It’s nice to get significant road wins in league. Those are really good teams that all have legitimate designs on winning not only a league championship but a national championship.”
Louis Sakanoko and Adrien Roure added eight kills apiece as all three pin hitters hit .333 or better for the Rainbow Warriors, who hit .453 as a team.
Starting middle blockers Trevell Jordan and Justin Todd combined for eight kills in nine swings.
William D’Arcy had 13 kills to lead UC Irvine (15-5, 3-3).
Hawaii more than doubled UCI in digs with 37. Libero Quintin Greenidge led the match with nine.
Hawaii won the second set despite UCI not making a single hitting error.
“We were definitely better defensively tonight,” Wade said. “There was a little higher sense of urgency and some better effort. Welcome to men’s volleyball when you literally make no hitting errors and lose. We slowed them down enough that we were able to come out on top in that second set when they were playing very well.”
Titriyski started the match hot on the right side with eight kills in 10 swings in the opening set.
His only error came at the end of a rally after Greenidge made a one-armed dig for one of his six in the opening set.
Hawaii made five service errors without an ace, but the Anteaters had six service errors of their own.
Titriyski kept his hot streak going in the second set with seven more kills. Hawaii trailed 20-19 when it rattled off a 5-0 run to get to set point.
Roure’s turn at the service line included two aces, one of them off the top of the net that fell on UCI’s side.
The teams had combined for 21 service errors at the 15-point mark of the second set, but Roure, who hit a changeup over the net for his second ace, had the pivotal turn to help UH go up two sets to none.
“I thought they were still doing what they were doing and they were playing at a pretty high level,” Wade said of UCI coming back from Friday’s disappointing five-set loss.
Hawaii served out only three times in the third set and got to match point at 24-16.
The Anteaters scored six straight points to get within two at 24-22.
Hawaii used both of its timeouts during the run but was able to end it on a Titriyski kill after he was double-blocked on the previous point.
Titriyski ended the match hitting .448 but had seven of Hawaii’s 11 hitting errors.
“He took like three errors during that run in the third set where he was a little overaggressive,” Wade said. “He hits the ball harder than most humans and usually good things happen, but he’s got to be a little more cerebral in those kind of long rallies and transition situations,” Wade said.
Hawaii, which has won seven in a row, has swept all three conference opponents this season on the second night of a back-to-back.
UH will fly home this morning and fly back to Southern California on Wednesday for its final two-match road series of the regular season against the Tritons.
