Krang made an interesting comment, and it got me thinking...

"To be honest, I want Leftwich, but I want Suggs equally. I'm going to be disappointed either way. Wouldn't it be crazy if somehow the Cards traded a bunch of picks to acquire BOTH?"

If the axiom "Amateurs talk strategy, professionals talk logistics." is true, what would it take to secure both Suggs and Leftwich?

1. Who would the Cardinals trade with to get the extra first round pick to get Suggs?

2. Who gets picked first?

3. What must the Cardinals give up to get that extra pick?

Here's my thoughts...

1. Take no chances, for this to work the Cardinals would have to get at least the #5 from the Cowboys, if not the #4 from Da Bears. The first three picks are as locked (in my mind at least) as it can be at this point, #1 Palmer QB, #2 Rogers WR, #3 Johnson WR. Either Chicago or Dallas could snag either one (or both!) of our picks.

2. Take Suggs first, take the hometown kid first to make the fans (half at least) happy.

3. This is the toughest question. If Lefty is our target with the pick we want to trade for, McCown becomes expendable. I would love to say McCown+Thomas Jones+next years 1st rounder to either Dallas or Chicago for their pick, but in my opinion, adding Jones decreases the value of that trade. If the Vapor-Lock Brain-Trust in Dallas would go for it, I wouldn't be disappointed if Dallas swapped their #5 overall in exchange for Shipp and/or McCown+an appropriate level draft pick (like a 3rd rounder this year or next).

I suggested this about a month ago. But I think we can probably trade with Minn for the 7th easier or possibly the 8th pick and still get Leftwich.

How about...

Signing KLass to a one year contract.

Then packaging KLass in a trade along with Jones, McCown, Russell Davis and next year's #1 - & sending them all to the Vikes.

It could work, but in your scenario, I think we'd have to take Leftwich first. We'd be giving up McCown, so we couldn't take the chance that Dallas would take our QB of the future.

Even if Dallas takes Suggs, we'd still be in great shape if we took Trufant or stretched a bit and grabbed Haynes or McDougal.

Otherwise I like it. Conference me in when you get Jerry Jones on the horn.

The flip side (of course there's always a flip side), is that I think next year's draft is shaping up to be better than this years. So we'd have to be confident that this moves puts us that much closer to the end of the first round rather than the top-10 again.

What in the heck would Minnesota want with Lassiter, Davis, and Jones, aka our trash?

Isn't that just a tad too expensive?

Wait, like we would miss any of those guys...

I like your thinking!

Moving in the other direction (to #7 or #8 ) is interesting because if our guy is there we could do it when those teams are on the clock. If our guy is gone, we could just sit tight.

How about this years and next years #2 as well as next years #1? And we get another 3rd rounder this year.

Also when it comes to our pick if they are both there we can spend the time during our pick as well as time during Minn's pick to work out a deal.

I would be able to live with that...my only concern is that we could fill some more holes with those picks, while under my plan we would be sending serious upside players with potenial, which in my opinion is more savory and tempting for a partner in a trade offer...

Of course trading away those picks would give our scouting department basically another year to fine tune themselves without costing the organization any money with bad picks...:D

For this to work you'd have to package a player that Minnesota might actually want. I'm thinking Adrian Wilson. Would many of you be willing to put this kind of package together?

Yes, I would...I consider everyone on the roster expendable in this case...not that I would prefer to of course...I got enough heat when I suggested trading Shipp, and I'm a huge Shipp fan!

The only player that I see not getting traded, under any circumstance, would be Emmitt. Not due to his playing ability, but because the Bidwills are banking on Emmitt to draw crowds and change perceptions...

I wouldn't get rid of Big, Clement, Shelton, or Pete

Here's my problem. To pick up an additional 1st you might have to trade 2 starters... that is if you're not trading future picks. KVB and Wilson would probably entice the Vikes into a trade. But, I'm not sure how much the Cards would gain in that scenerio.

List me as a fence sitter in the whole Leftwich/Suggs debate...leaning towards Leftwich. Still I think that if the Cards were to pick up an additional first round pick they'd spend it on another defensive player who could start immediately. The Cards aren't just drafting for need... they're drafting to fill gaping immediate needs.

Personally, I would draft Lefty under the assumption that he could sit for at least a year, heal that leg and learn the system. Still, Graves and Mac are running the draft, not me. They'll take Suggs under the assumpton that he can start in September and he fills an immediate need. If by some act of God they happened to trade into another 1st round pick they'd probably take another DT or DB.

We covered all the other bases Tango. There is nothing left to debate. If we don't start cooking up something, anything, to discuss we will lose it and end up in the State Hospital looking at inkblots!

"umm, I see Suggs...this one I see Leftwich...oh that one? I see Suggs sacking Leftwich...I see Plummer costing the Broncos a chance at the playoffs...on that one I see one of those Hooter's girls, only in a tube-top, hot-pants, and go-go boots..."

True enough...but bringing up the mishandling of Boston will only open old wounds...I'm trying to be a unifying force by debating a way we can all get who we want...

I'm leary of trading away this years second since it's almost like a 1st anyways. Especially if Faine is still on the board, who I'd really like them to take. I think center has become one of our forgotten needs in this offseason, and getting the top rated center in the 2nd would be sweet.
