I keep getting a notice of:

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

????

I tried downloading the installer from MS site but it says the app is already installed and will not let me install it again???

Thanks,
Dave

Under what circumstances are you getting this error?

Here are two links to Microsoft support concerning this issue.

This one pertains to installing Microsoft Plus for Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=315353

And this one for Microsoft Office: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324516

The first link (Microsoft Plus) has the best instuction set to follow in a general situation if neither software package applies, and is suitable for both XP Home and XP Pro.

Is this a third party software? Chances are their installer didn't register a DLL correctly or some other problem and the uninstall wizard is having trouble uninstalling it,not likely a windows issue.

I have had the same error before and used this program
http://download.com.com/3000-2096-10225009.html?tag=lst-0-10

It has a 21 day trial, just delete it when you are done. It will remove anything from your Add/Remove directory that gives you an error. It simply bypasses the Windows installer and removes the entries from the registry etc..
