Auburn baseball head coach Butch Thompson put the icing on his transfer portal haul Sunday by landing a talented right-handed pitcher from the Big 12 Conference.
Former Baylor right-handed pitcher Brayden Bergman announced his commitment to Auburn on Sunday via X. His announcement comes after entering the transfer portal on May 9 after spending two seasons with the Bears.
Bergman signed with Baylor as the No. 1 pitcher from the state of Texas in the 2024 recruiting cycle, and the No. 6 player overall from the Lone Star State, according to Perfect Game. His fastball tops out at 97 miles per hour according to Perfect Game, and he boasts a four-pitch repertoire.
However, his full potential as a college pitcher has yet to be reached. An injury forced Bergman to miss most of his freshman season in 2025, where he pitched in just one game. He took a step forward in 2026 by appearing in 21 games, totaling 22 1/3 innings. He totaled 26 strikeouts and walked 23 batters in 2026, boasting a 5.64 ERA and an opposing batting average of .215. Bergman comes to Auburn hoping to revive a career that has plenty of potential.
Pitching was the main focus of Auburn baseball's transfer portal strategy after the Tigers lost five pitchers to the MLB draft, four pitchers to the transfer portal, and one to graduation. Auburn's coaching staff addressed their needs by adding six pitchers from the transfer portal, along with five high school signees. Outside of losing five pitchers from the 2026 roster to the MLB draft, Auburn is also expected to see two high school pitcher signees, Coleman Borthwick and AJ Rice, not reach campus after being selected in the MLB draft.
Despite losing a large number of pitchers from the 2026 roster, Auburn will return several notable arms, including starters Jake Marciano and Andreas Alvarez, and relievers Jackson Sanders and LJ Cormier, for the 2027 roster. Those arms will appreciate the support of Auburn's transfer portal haul, which features experienced pieces.
