HARBOR SPRINGS — There won’t exactly be a whole lot of on-field momentum for the Harbor Springs girls soccer team to take into the postseason after a string of cancellations.
But, a recent Northern Shores Conference championship certainly lifts spirits.
The Rams pulled in an 8-0 win over Kingsley late last week that delivered the title in a 10-0-1 league season, then were expected to add to it this week, until games against Charlevoix and Boyne City were called off.
Making the title even more special, it came as a chance to celebrate seniors for the Rams, in more ways than one.
“All my seniors on senior night were able to get a goal for us,” Harbor Springs coach Aaron Riley said. “We are looking to carry that momentum into the postseason after having three games canceled or forfeited in a row. By the time we play again, it’ll almost be two weeks.”
The regular season closed for the Rams in an 11-1-2 record overall.

Against the Stags, it was freshmen Maeve Riley and Meme Animikwam getting the Rams on the board first, which then led to a string of senior goals.
Seniors Lizzie Bassett, Sophie Barnadyn, Sydney Burch, Fran Warren and Lilly Barnadyn all added scores, along with freshman Bella Baker.
Assists then came from Stefi Reskevics, Sophie Barnadyn, Riley, Animikwam and a pair from Bassett.
The unbeaten title for the Rams actually came as a second straight after an 11-0 league season a year ago, when they also went 15-3 overall.

One thing the Rams will try to change this season is their postseason, as a 2-1 district loss to Leland last season ended things well before planned.
This season, district play will begin on Tuesday, May 26 against either Suttons Bay or Charlevoix, with a 5 p.m. matchup at Harbor Springs.
The Rams will host throughout, with the potential of an Elk Rapids or Leland rematch in the district final at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 28.
“We look forward to the matchup next Tuesday and seeing Charlevoix or Suttons Bay,” Riley added. “Hopefully we’re able to make a championship matchup and see Elk, Glen Lake or Leland on Thursday.”

TRAVERSE CITY — As girls soccer teams head into the postseason, it’s always nice to have something to hang a hat on late in the regular season.
Of late for the Petoskey girls soccer team, that’s been missing.
Losses to Traverse City West and Lake Orion and a draw against Traverse City St. Francis led into the final regular season week.
Then came a trip down to Traverse City Tuesday, May 19, when Petoskey got back on track.
After topping TC Central in a 1-0 final earlier this season, Petoskey added a second 1-0 result Tuesday.
Like in their previous matchup, Petoskey leaned on its defense and the play of the Isla Scheib in net against the Trojans.
“We really meshed as a team tonight and had some key saves from Amelie Janssens in the backline and Isla Scheib in goal,” Petoskey coach John Lennon said.

The lone goal for the Northmen come off the foot of senior Claire O’Donnell, who scored off a corner kick.
Petoskey moved to 8-5-1 overall and 7-4 in the Big North and meets up with Gaylord (13-2-1) on Thursday.
Gaylord, who dropped a 3-0 game against TC West Tuesday, needs a win over Petoskey to capture a share of the Big North title, currently sitting at 9-1 as of Wednedsay, behind the Titans’ 10-1 mark.
