Haas Formula 1 driver Ollie Bearman has crashed out of the Japanese Grand Prix.

The safety car was deployed after the Briton crashed into the barriers at Spoon Curve. Bearman was seen limping away from the wreck and sitting at the side of the track surrounded by marshals before heading to the medical centre.

It has since been confirmed that the driver didn't sustain a fracture after x-rays at the medical centre, despite the impact measuring at 50G. He does, however, have a right knee contusion.

Replays showed that the Haas driver went for an overtake on Alpine's Franco Colapinto, who appeared to be harvesting energy, but lost control before the corner entry, dipped onto the grass before sliding back across the track and into the barrier.

"He had huge closing speed against the car in front, so had to take avoiding action and went on the grass and crashed. Scary," Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu told Sky Sports F1.

"I believe so yes," he added, when asked if Bearman was now in the medical centre.

Bearman had started the race from 18th on the grid. "In the first run, we had a switch issue on the car and we lost time on the straights," the 20-year-old said after qualifying.

"On run two, I didn’t find any pace, so I need to understand whether there was still a small issue with the car or if it was fixed, but there are very tight margins out there and it wasn’t enough to get through today.

"It’s a shame about qualifying, but there’s still going to be plenty of opportunities in the race, I’m optimistic. If it was 12 months ago, I’d be much less so, however there’s going to be a lot of overtaking."

Despite the crash, Bearman has had a strong start to the 2026 season, sitting fifth in the drivers' standings prior to the Japanese Grand Prix.
