As the Schuylkill Haven swim team winds down the regular season, two sophomores are working to make their second straight PIAA State Championship appearance in March.
Hope Stauffer broke a Hurricanes team record in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:16.63 at Blue Mountain on Thursday, and Ethan Miller has the league’s fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.59.
The pair competed at last season’s PIAA State Championships last when Stauffer qualified in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, and Miller swam in the 200-yard individual medley.
“I love the people on the team, and everyone is so supportive,” Stauffer said. “I like the sprinting a lot more than long distance. The 200-yard individual medley is my best swim right now and the 50-yard freestyle is my favorite swim.”
Stauffer is joined by her sister Cali, a senior, who was part of the 200-yard medley relay team that finished first at Thursday’s meet with a time of 2:11.80. The sisters also compete together on the 200-yard freestyle relay squad, which placed second on Thursday in 1:55.74.
“I think it’s competitive because (Cali) swims some of the same events I do, like the 50- or 100-yard freestyles, and then sometimes we’ll swim the 500,” Stauffer said. “We’ve gotten so much closer at practice, and that’s brought us that much closer together.”
Stauffer currently has the league’s fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in 25.49 seconds. She also placed first in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.03 on Thursday.
Miller joined in the fun Thursday when he placed first in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.86 seconds, as well as first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.58. Miller has acknowledged the butterfly and breaststroke swims are his favorite and he’s been able to build up his sprinting time this season.
“I excel most in the sprint events like the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle because I like to sprint and I don’t like to do a lot of freestyle,” Miller said. “It’s been fun hyping up the team for the relays.”
Thursday’s meet was good preparation for the postseason, as Blue Mountain’s boys have won eight straight Schuylkill League team championships.
“I like swimming against Blue Mountain since a lot of us are friends,” Miller said. “And it’ll help for the postseason, because they’re good competition when it comes to the postseason.”
Miller earned silver medals at last year’s District 11 Championship in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke. He currently has the fastest time in the league in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing in 2:06.95.
Miller also broke Schuylkill Haven’s 100-yard butterfly record earlier this season — previously set by Austin Bayliff in 2013 — with a time of 57.30 seconds. He also broke the Hurricanes’ team-record in the 500-yard medley freestyle last February with a time of 5:07.55.
The Schuylkill League Swimming Championship is just a week away, set for Saturday, Jan. 31.
Teams will then prepare for the District 11 Swimming Championship on Feb. 20 and 21 at Parkland High School. The PIAA Class AA Swimming Championship is slated for Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14.
