ASHLAND — Pottsville baseball’s offense struggled most of the game.

That changed in the sixth inning as the Tide’s offense caught fire scoring four runs in their 7-3 Schuylkill League Division 1 over North Schuylkill. The Tide now stand at 2-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Down 1-0 in the inning, Alan Kushwarra started the inning off with a walk, Landon Trout got on as he laid a bunt down third base and reached first base on an error by North Schuylkill. Brody Hass loaded the bases as he drew a walk. Harrison Ciavarella came up and delivered for the Tide as he hit a three-run triple down the left field line to put Pottsville up 3-1.

“I wasn’t thinking much,” said Ciavarella. “I just tried to put the barrel on the ball. We really knew we had to score.”

“Harrison came up in a big spot and hit the ball right where it needed to be,” said Pottsville’s head coach Michael Welsh. “It was a great at bat by him.”

Both teams were scoreless through the first two innings as Pottsville’s Max Clews and North Schuylkill’s Chase Slotcavage took care of business on the mound.

The Spartans (2-5, 1-4) got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning. Landen Smith started it off with a bunt single to third base. Slotcavage drew a walk. Kolton Joyce came up next and got on base after being hit by a pitch. Hunter Rogers came up and hit a sac fly to center field to put North Schuylkill up 1-0.

Clews got out of trouble as he forced a ground out and recorded a strikeout. Clews went six strong innings for the Tide and only gave up one run to go along with three strikeouts.

“I am super impressed with Max’s growth so far this year,” said Welsh. “He pitched out of a tough spot there.”

North Schuylkill got a hit in the fifth inning as Kevin Jones hit a single. Jones was gunned down as he was running for second base.

The Tide added some much needed insurance in the top of the seventh inning. Clews started it off as he drilled a double to left field. Kushwarra got on base after a bunt single. Trout put the Tide up 5-1 with a single to center field that scored Clews.

Brody Eroh had a big hit as he hit a two-run double to extend the Pottsville lead to 7-1.

The Tide came into the game on a seven game losing streak. So this win they had to get.

“Coming off the losses we had,” said Ciavarella. “We really needed to turn it around and I think this was the game for it.”

North Schuylkill didn’t go down without a fight. The Spartans got two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to a two-run double by Jones to make it 7-3.

Trout came in for Pottsville and relieved Hess for the final out of the game. Trout got Kole Rollenhagen to ground out with the bases loaded to secure the win.

“I am just proud of the overall team effort our guys put on out there,” said Welsh. “Hopefully this allows us to get that feeling of what we need to do and maybe it leads to some more wins for us.”

Pottsville will face Schuylkill Valley Friday at 4:30 p.m. North Schuylkill will compete against Tamaqua Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
