Payton Plizga tossed a complete seven-inning shoutout as Grand Valley blanked Brookfield 3-0 for a Division VI Northeast 2 baseball win Thursday at GVHS.

The Mustangs improved to 16-4 overall, and advanced to a district semifinal game.

GV, the seventh seed, is scheduled to host either No. 21 Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas or No. 14 Smithville at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

“The win secures our first district appearance since 2019, and the most wins in a season since 2018,” Mustangs coach Zach Sirrine said. “The guys have worked hard to get to this point, and are excited to have the opportunity to keep the season going next week.”

Plizga allowed six hits with 11 strikeouts.

“Payton was incredible on the mound, and really kept them off balance,” Sirrine said. “I’m really happy for him to get a playoff win under his belt.”

Offensively, GV made its five hits count, led by Carter Turk with two.

Payton Plizga, Cooper Plizga and Nick Barbieri added one hit apiece. Barbieri, who notched a double, accounted for the lone RBI.

“Really proud of the guys on the win,” Sirrine said. “We’ve talked all year about finding a way and they were able to do that [Thursday], when we didn’t have our best stuff offensively.”

The Blue Streaks, 10-8-1, rolled to a D-III, Northeast 5 sectional tournament title win Thursday. It was Madison’s first sectional championship since 1991.

Schultz belted a home run, Yarnell recorded a triple and Gibbons a double.

Gvora went all five innings for the pitching win. He yielded one earned run, five hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

“The best part of the win for me was every single player on the team did something relevant to help us win,” Madison coach Brian Titman said. “We scored in multiple, different ways ... singles, doubles, a homer and walks.”

Titman was especially happy for the senior class.

“The have been a coaches dream as a group this year,” Titman said. “To see them all rally around each other and compete how they do every night means a lot.”
