ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Guilford basketball player Brandon Chatman is used to playing in front of big crowds. Wednesday, a big crowd turned out at the school to watch him make his college commitment official. Chatman signed with Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. That’s a NJCAA Division II school.

Chatman was a two-time NIC-10 MVP for Guilford, and he was part of four NIC-10 championship teams and co-championship teams. This past season he was also named second team All-State. He averaged 21.5ppg while shooting 62 percent from the field. He also averaged 7.4 rebounds per game and 3.3 assists.

In this new era of college sports that has NCAA four-year college programs looking to the transfer portal for recruits rather than to the high schools, Chatman was bypassed. He told me he’ll prove himself at Kirkwood, and then he’ll have those D-1 programs pursuing him.

Watch the media player for my interview with Chatman.

Kirkwood Community College is coached by former Rock Valley College coach Tim Sandquist. Kirkwood will be playing at Rock Valley’s jamboree at the start of next season, so Rockford folks won’t have to travel far to watch Chatman play for Kirkwood.
