The Cleveland Guardians have struggled to come up with the big hit to break open the game over the last month or so.

However, sometimes, it only takes one swing for a team to find itself on the winning side, and that’s exactly what happened on Thursday evening in Cleveland's win over the Chicago White Sox, 6-5.

As a team, the Guardians went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and were down just one run entering the ninth inning. It was shaping up to be another contest where Cleveland had chances to win, but just couldn’t

But thanks to Brayan Rocchio, the Guardians went home smiling as he hit a walk-off two-run home run off the right field foul pole to take the series opener against the White Sox.

Rocchio’s game-winning home run against the White Sox was the second walk-off homer of his career. The other came last September, in the season finale against the Texas Rangers, as Cleveland clinched the American League Central.

It just so happens that both of those home runs ended with the ball bouncing off the foul pole.

"It's hard to come through in that situation. It's not, it's not a given. You gotta get the right pitch, you gotta be ready for it," said manager Stephen Vogt after the game.

Rocchio's home run is more than just a massive walk-off hit for the Guardians.

It all represents the growth and development he's made this season, while also being an integral piece to Cleveland's lineup in 2026.

"Rocchio's having a tremendous year," continued Vogt.

"He was getting used to sitting in the nine-hole; he knew that identity. Then, obviously, the injuries happened, and put him at the top of the order, and now we're, he's kind of the Swiss army knife of the lineup. So we've asked a lot of them, and he's handled it all wonderfully."

As it pertains to the larger picture, the Guardians beating the White Sox by one run on a walk-off is the perfect way for this series to open.

Seventeen of Cleveland's last 26 games have been decided by two or fewer runs, and in all three games the two clubs played two weeks ago were decided by two runs or less.

With this victory, the Guardians are officially back in first place in the division, but there's a long way to go and a lot of baseball to be played.

By all indications, these two teams are bound for three more tight, closely contested games at Progressive Field this weekend, and this division race could come down to one game in September.
