Guardians have a Gabriel Arias problem, but they have 2 solutions originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Cleveland Guardians aren't getting the production they need out of their middle infield.
That's especially true with shortstop Gabriel Arias. He's not just off to a slow start this season. It dates back to last year.
Guardians Prospective shared what Arias' stats are over the past 40 games, and they're brutal:
- .164 average
- .211 on-base percentage
- 22-for-134
- 5 doubles
- 1 triple
- 2 homers
- 9 RBI
- 7 walks
- 61 strikeouts
He has struck out in nearly half of his at bats. That's horrific.

The good news for Cleveland is they don't have to stick with this.
The first key to any change that is coming will likely be to move Brayan Rocchio from second base to shortstop. At that point, they'll have two choices to go from there.
Juan Brito is the longer-tenured minor leaguer and hasn't yet really gotten a chance in MLB. He could be the first choice.
But when former No. 1 pick Travis Bazzana is ready, it'll be his turn eventually. If he can hit well over the next couple weeks, the Guardians could even make the cool soon, especially if Arias continues to struggle.
At this point, it doesn't seem like Arias will turn things around. Cleveland is due to make a change.
