The post Griffins Display Red Wings Tendencies in Playoff Loss appeared first on Detroit Hockey Now.
It was as if the Grand Rapids Griffins wanted to remind everyone that they are the top farm club for the Detroit Red Wings.
Blowing a 3-1 lead and losing 4-3 in overtime to the Chicago Wolves in Game 2 of their Calder Cup playoff series, the Griffins were displaying tendencies that are all too familiar to Red Wings fans.
On offense, they were too cute with the puck, limiting their scoring chances. A defensive zone faceoff loss led to a Chicago goal. And after surrendering that goal, the Griffins went into a funk and took quite some time to rediscover their game.
“Just came out hard and really wanted to win the game,” Grand Rapids forward Michael Brandsegg-Nygard said. “We started off good and kind of let it slip through.”
Clinging to a one-goal lead in the third period, Grand Rapids wasn’t able to find a much-needed insurance goal, eventually coughing up its scoreboard advantage.
“We needed one more goal,” Grand Rapids coach Dan Watson said. “They just kept chipping away at it.”
Grand Rapids was up 2-0 less than five minutes into the game, and ahead 3-1 after the first period. Chicago just kept coming, though. And the Griffins stopped going.
“We let off the gas,” Griffins captain, Dominik Shine, said. “We were taking it to them there first period. I thought in the second period, too.
“You could feel at the end of the second, we kind of laid off and kind of let them find their game. We had to stay aggressive, keep putting pucks behind them, keep hitting them.
“That’s what it was. “
As the action shifts to Chicago, Game 3 in this best-of-five series is set for Tuesday. Grand Rapids must win the next three games, or the season is over for the Griffins.
“It’s a long series,” Shine said. “It’s not over yet.
