The 2024 college football season showcased several breakthrough performances, with some teams successfully making a run for the College Football Playoff (CFP).
Notably, the Indiana Hoosiers, Arizona State Sun Devils and SMU Mustangs all enjoyed strong regular seasons and earned spots in the CFP. One team that delivered an impressive performance but failed to qualify for the playoff is the South Carolina Gamecocks.
They finished the season with a record of 9-4, marking their best season since 2017, when they also recorded a 9-4 record. Their No. 15 ranking in the final CFP poll represents the highest finish in school history and is only the second time the Gamecocks have ended the season in the top 25.

As the 2025 season approaches, there is a sense of optimism that the Gamecocks might have a chance to secure their first College Football Playoff appearance. However, Greg McElroy from ESPN expressed his reservations on "Always College Football," stating that he is not yet convinced about South Carolina's prospects.
"I still have legitimate questions about what this passing attack is going to look like," McElroy said. "There are things to figure out with South Carolina. As I'm watching, studying and learning more about them, I think there are more questions than answers right now, especially on the defensive side, coming back for the Gamecocks."
There is a sense of optimism surrounding South Carolina with the return of star redshirt sophomore quarterback LaNorris Sellers. Last season, he threw for 2,534 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions, completing 65.6 percent of his passes. He also demonstrated his versatility by rushing for 674 yards and scoring seven touchdowns.
The Gamecocks also welcome back standout freshman pass rusher Dylan Stewart, who recorded 6.5 sacks last year. However, the team must face the challenge of replacing several key players. They lost leading rusher Raheim Sanders, who had 881 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns, as well as Kyle Kennard, who led the team with 11.5 sacks. Additionally, tight end Joshua Simon, the only player to surpass 500 receiving yards with 519 yards and seven touchdowns, has moved on to the NFL.
While there is optimism due to last season’s achievements, South Carolina has many questions to address before the upcoming season, according to McElroy.
