Prior to the game, Ava Workman was just 19 points away from her 1,000th career point. She started chipping away at that right away. In the third quarter, she scored a layup to accomplish this milestone. Prior to that basket she had went a little silent in the scorer’s sheet.
“Honestly, I think our fans, my bench, the energy brought me up. The adrenaline just started kicking in,” said Workman, when talking about how that basket rejuvenated her hot hand to help the Spartans to victory.
“It was unbelievable and you know, just a junior. [Ava] is on her way to play college basketball somewhere and everything. Probably have a lot of choices. But a lot of these kids did so blooming good,” added Lady Spartans’ head coach Jim Justice.
Kennedy Stewart and Mackenna McClure added 8 a-piece to the Spartans’ tally.
“[Winning this as a team] was very special to us because, I mean, it is our home tournament, so we had to win it,” said Workman.
“[This was] a whale of a game. This is a tribute to high schools sports. It is a tribute to women and girls, how hard they work. They absolutely deserve everything that they have and more and more and more and more,” said Justice.
The Lady Spartans sit atop their perch in AAA with a 16-0 record, after winning this one in overtime 57-55.
